Understanding rehabilitation

About Canine Rehabilitation

What is canine rehabilitation

Canine rehabilitation is a growing field in veterinary medicine that applies physiotherapy principles to dogs. The goal is to address the harmful effects of immobilisation — including muscle wasting, and cartilage, ligament, and bone degeneration. Many of these effects from common conditions and surgeries can be eliminated or significantly reduced by allowing guided, appropriate exercise during periods of restricted activity. Using a combination of manual therapy, home exercise programmes, and specialist modalities, we can increase muscle mass and reduce pain associated with orthopaedic procedures and osteoarthritis. These services are not meant to replace your regular veterinary care — we do not diagnose or prescribe medications.

How do I know if my dog needs rehabilitation?

Your dog may benefit from rehabilitation if any of the following apply:

- Recent TPLO, TTA, or other orthopaedic surgery

- Recent surgery causing pain or reduced mobility

- Your dog is not performing to their usual ability

- A sudden behavioural change that may be linked to pain or injury

- Unexplained weakness that has developed over time

- Diagnosis of "weak hips" or hip dysplasia

- Intermittent lameness in the front or rear limb where x-rays have not provided a clear answer

If you're unsure, get in touch — Tania is happy to advise whether rehabilitation is likely to help your dog.

My dog keeps limping despite tests coming back clear - can you help?

Intermittent lameness that comes and goes — despite blood tests and x-rays — is an area Tania has particular expertise in. Many vets across the GTA refer their patients to Tania specifically for this type of complex lameness assessment. This team approach, between Tania and your primary vet, provides the most well-rounded experience and the best chance of getting to the root cause and achieving positive results.

Do you use underwater treadmills (hydrotherapy)?

No — Canine Wellness Centre uses a land-based rehabilitation philosophy. Tania has developed a bespoke approach centred on manual therapy, modalities, and home exercise programmes that involve you directly in your dog's recovery. When humans recover from hip or knee replacements, they don't use underwater treadmills — Tania applies the same reasoning to canine rehabilitation.

Booking & What to Expect

Do I need a referral from my vet?

An informed consent form is required — please download and complete it before your visit. You should also bring a copy of your dog's relevant medical records, a current list of supplements and medications prescribed by your vet, and any special treats. We supply towels, treats, and a positive experience for your dog. You do not need a formal referral, but having your vet's records and any recent imaging will help Tania provide the most thorough assessment.

What should I bring to the initial assessment?

Please bring:

- Your dog's veterinary records pertaining to their injury or condition

- Any recent x-rays or imaging reports

- A current list of medications and supplements

- Any special treats your dog loves

- Your completed informed consent form

We supply towels, treats, and ensure a calm, positive experience for your dog.

What happens during the initial assessment?

During your initial visit, Tania will ask you pertinent medical questions and perform a thorough examination of your dog's gait, range of motion, strength, mobility, and pain levels. From this information, an individualised rehabilitation plan will be created for your dog. This plan will often include a written at-home exercise schedule so you can actively support your dog's recovery between sessions.

Do you offer virtual consultations?

Yes — Tania offers virtual consultations for clients who cannot travel to Colborne. Virtual appointments are conducted via video call and are available to clients anywhere in the world. They are billed in USD. To book a virtual consultation, use the online calendar on the Book Now page.

Online Courses & Guides

What online courses do you offer?

Canine Wellness Centre offers several online courses and guides, including:

- Free TPLO Prep Guide — preparation for dogs due to undergo TPLO surgery

- TPLO 8-Week Recovery Guide Part 1 (Weeks 1–4).

- TPLO 8-Week Recovery Guide Part 2 (Weeks 5–8).

- CBD for Pets Guide — navigating veterinary cannabis products safely.

All courses are video-guided and structured for dog owners to follow at home.

Can I do the online course instead of in-person rehabilitation?

The online courses are designed to complement your dog's recovery — particularly for post-TPLO owners who want a structured, expert-guided plan to follow at home. They are not a replacement for professional in-person or virtual assessment, especially where your dog has complex needs. If you are unsure which option is right for your dog, book a virtual consultation and Tania can advise.
