When is my pet in need of emergency medical attention?

Not sure if it is an emergency? Here are some symptoms that may require immediate care:

  • Respiratory distress (laboured breathing, choking)
  • Neurological impairment- inability to walk or use a leg
  • Potential foreign body ingestion or possible toxic poisoning.
  • Severe bodily harm (motor vehicle accident, animal attack, etc.)
  • Potential broken bones • Shock: Blue, white or very pale gums
  • Collapse or loss of consciousness, or inability to respond to stimuli
  • Dizziness, imbalance, or circling • Seizures • Signs of acute severe pain (such as crying out very loudly and excessively)
  • Body temperature over 104 or under 99 (normal is typically 100.5-102.5)
  • Inability to urinate or defecate
  • Enlarged or bloated abdomen, retching, gagging
